My Fight to Beat Scleroderma

Scleroderma is an autoimmune connective tissue disease affecting small blood vessels causing excess collagen production. There are two forms of Scleroderma. localized, which mostly affects the skin, and Diffuse, which affects internal organs and is ultimately terminal. There is no current cure. In 2004, I was diagnosed with Diffuse Scleroderma. This blog exists to spread awareness and to detail my journey of hope for an autologous stem cell transplant to ultimately cure this dreaded disease

About Me

My photo
Michael Adams
I am a sheet metal mechanic and have been a foreman with my company (Halo) for 28 years. I have coached various sports for my children for the past 15 years. In 2004 I was diagnosed with Diffuse Systemic Sclerosis, a condition that has no known cure. After doing research and through the help of my mentor, Jane Erickson, transplant recipient and advocate, I discovered Dr. Burt a doctor at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, who is pioneering the use of stem cell transplants to treat Scleroderma. Simply put, this process will use my own stem cells to reset my faulty immune system. Diffuse Scleroderma has a very poor prognosis and with my symptoms worsening, particularly my lung function, I have decided to go forth with an Autologous stem cell transplant to reverse this devastating disease. I hope to continue to be a great dad to my two awesome children, Amanda and Mikey, a great husband to my beautiful wife Donna, a good coach to all of the kids I coach in Readington, and a great friend to all.
